The Sight Reading Project Best Practices

This is a quick "how-to" on using The Sight Reading Project (tSRP). Although this site was designed for the choral classroom, there are plenty of applications in all music applications wishing to improve on sight reading skills. It is important to note that the SRP was not designed to replace quality music instruction, but rather, it is a resource for a teachers and students to work on sight-reading skillsets together. Below is an example of the teaching sequence used and suggested by the creator of the site for the classroom setting.

Requirements

  • Computer with Internet access
  • Classroom projector and screen
  • Any modern browser (Google Chrome recommended)

Sequence

  • Choose an accessible exercise
  • Provide a pitch level appropriate for your group
  • Perform the exercise in three passes
    1. With "All solfege" syllables
    2. With the tonic triad only: select Do-Mi-Sol, La-Do-Mi, or Do-Me-Sol
This step forces the reader to follow the notes instead of just the syllables
    3. The third time, read without any solfege labels

Individual Home Study

For home study, download the MIDI file and manually scroll the music frame by the bottom scroll bar along with the music. Always begin by establishing a comfortable key by singing a scale or arpeggio. Then, try the same three above steps for the classroom until you are comfortable with the syllables and pitches.
